California is polarized

The above statement is perhaps not surprising, but a recent graph by Boris Shor shows us just how polarized the state legislature is. The graph shows common-space scores (measures of ideology derived from votes taken in the legislatures) for legislators in each of the states. Note that California’s Republicans are more conservative than any other state’s on average, and California’s Democrats are likewise more liberal than any other state’s. The distance between the two parties is (as one might therefore expect) greater than in any other state.
