How Surprising Was Prop. 8’s Win?

California is not as liberal as it is imagined to be. Many people were shocked by the passage of Prop. 8. They should not have been. Here’s county support for Prop. 22 (the legislative initiative statute version passed in 2000) compared to county support to Prop. 8 (the constitutional amendment version passed in 2008). Counties that supported Prop. 22 supported tended to support Prop. 8. Counties that opposed Prop. 22 opposed Prop. 8. The key county in both cases was Los Angeles County, which voted for both propositions. The difference is that the average county’s level of support for the two measures fell by almost 10 points between 2000 and 2008.
